Is It Possible To Relace A Jeep Cherokee Drive Chain On Np249 With Removing The Transfer Case?

Hello, I have a 95 jeep grand cherokee with an NP249 “quadra-trak” transfer case. Is it possible to access and replace the drive chain without removing the case from the Jeep? I can’t pull the extension housing off because it is held in place by a locking ring which I doubt I can access while it is still on the vechicle. Thanks!

    I swear I’ve seen someone do it before, though its been a while (years).
    Besides, its only like 8 more bolts to just get it off the trans…. It would be uber easy if you just removed it from the truck.
    or even better, change it out for a better Xfer case
